Redfern boxer fights in Canada

West recently defended his title in Brisbane at the annual bout between NSW Kooris and Queensland Murrays.

“When I was 15 I thought I’d be a football player, not jumping in the ring”, West, now a full-time engineer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, said.

“Boxing’s everything now, part of my life.”

The Indigenous Boxing Academy in Redfern where West trains was set up by Alex Wymarra and friends to help gets kids off the street.

The academy has 60 members and plans to expand to Mount Druitt, Campbelltown, Woolloomooloo and La Perouse.
