Friends in High Places

One man polishing his Australia Day gong this morning is Roy Wakelin-King. You may remember him from such government appointments as chief executive officer of the World Youth Day Co-ordination Authority reports The Diary in the Sydney Morning Herald of 26 January 2010.

World Youth Day, you may also remember, delivered somewhere up to 95,000 pilgrims fewer than expected to NSW, was moved at the last moment from Homebush Bay to Randwick Racecourse and cost up to $50 million more than expected. The minister in charge of the whole extravaganza was the then little known Kristina Keneally. Today Wakelin-King heads the Redfern Waterloo Authority, which Keneally remains responsible for even as premier. He was once the director of the Transport Operations Division for Transport NSW. In this role he ran the state's taxi services. Mysterious ways and all that.
