New Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras workshops open in Redfern St

Brendan Doran, Peter Urmson and Michael Rolik
New Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik said the parade aimed for quality not
quantity this year and a collaborative approach was being taken with the
thousands of people who wanted get involved.
For the first time the parade will be curated by consultant creative
director, Ignatius Jones and workshop consultant Jane Becker, with the
campaign moniker of ``say something’’ – aimed to reflect many salient
topics.
Floats will support a cohesive artistic vision and it is hoped the creative standard of the parade which reach new heights.
Some 140 floats will take part.
All the Mardi Gras community parade floats will be built in the Redfern
workshops, for the first time being sponsored by Google and with help
from Sydney Council.
Anyone handy with a drill, good at marshalling crowds or dying fabric is
encouraged to contact the workshop. Donations of materials and tools,
wood, sequins, satin or leather are also sought.
New Mardi Gras co-chair Pete Urmson urged people to get involved.
``If you’re a parade entrant, come and check out the space and have a
chat to our workshop team: It could mean that your float could move from
fabulous to iconic.”
Last year the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade attracted an audience of 300,000.
