Students build for the future

TWO Koori students from Bonnyrigg High School have experienced what it's like to work in the construction industry. Year 11 students Tyson Parker and Malcolm Clayton completed a Koori Job Ready course in construction in April offered by TAFE NSW Chullora and the Redfern-Waterloo Authority reports Nena Bogunovic of Bonnyrigg High School in the Fairfield City Champion of August 15, 2007.

For eight weeks, the two got hands-on experience in carpentry, formwork, gyprock, plastering, plumbing, concreting and bricklaying.

The students also completed their general OH&S induction card and a Senior First Aid Certificate.

The Koori Job Ready course in construction was established by Les Tobler of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union and Col Warn of Chullora TAFE.

``It's great to see how this chance has given them a new sense of responsibility and prospects for a good future working life,'' career adviser Divna Dokmanovic said.

Both students have the opportunity to go onto apprenticeships, with the Macarthur Group Training Company, MG My Gateway, looking for jobs in construction on behalf of the Redfern-Waterloo Authority.

After his experience in the course, Tyson Parker has chosen a plastering apprenticeship.
