Football (aka soccer) in South Sydney

The newly established PCYC FC South Sydney has had a successful first season as a member club of the Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA reports Travis Lane in the South Sydney Herald of September 2007).

The club was established this year after many requests by the community to provide the children of the South Sydney area with opportunities to play and participate in the sport of football (also known, to some, as soccer).

Football is the number one participation sport for juniors in Australia; however the South Sydney area lacks resources to participate in the game. With the assistance of many members of the community PCYC FC South Sydney was formed, and with the funding of new football posts, the club’s home field is at Alexandria Park Community School.

Having to compete with the very strong rugby league culture and the fast growing Australian Rules game, the PCYC FC South Sydney used the hype surrounding the World Cup and the Socceroos, and was able to secure enough players to form two teams in the Under6-years division. With both boys and girls competing, the teams launched their season in mid-April and have kicked their way to many wins, and have done so with great enthusiasm and spirit.

With the season coming to an end, focus will turn to the future, as the club looks to prepare for the upcoming 2008 season. The club is hoping that with its success on the field and establishing itself in the ESFA community, next season they will be able to attract many more boys and girls of all ages to support many more teams.

Registrations for the 2008 season will start from November 19, 2007.
