Changing platforms for historic Eveleigh

The old Eveleigh railway yards are set to become home for more than 2500 people, provide 3000 jobs during construction and breathe new life into Redfern under a State Government $550 million redevelopment plan writes MICK ROBERTS in The City News May 3 2008.

The heritage listed railway workshops will include a 16-storey apartment complex just 100 metres from The Block under the redevelopment proposal.

Planning Minister Frank Sartor announced the historic North Eveleigh workshops’ transformation into 1260 new flats, including up to 200 flats reserved for affordable rental housing, last week.

The expected $100 million raised from selling the public land will fuel the upgrade of Redfern Railway Station with a pedestrian bridge and other needed infrastructure.

Mr Sartor said the urban renewal project would retain heritage buildings, blending them with a vibrant new living community.

The announcement comes after Mr Sartor invited tenders to submit designs, and develop the landmark $2.5 billion Barangaroo project at East Darling Harbour earlier this month.

Concept approval for the urban renewal of 1.4 kilometres of harbour foreshore is expected to deliver billions of dollars in capital investment for Sydney and thousands of construction jobs, as well as the creation of an 11-hectare headland park.

Mr Sartor said the project is a unique opportunity to create a new harbour front recreational area comparable in size to Hyde Park. The redevelopment of Barangaroo on the western edge of the CBD will create a new gateway to the city, he said.

The projects will also deliver commercial space, new homes and two major new parks for Sydney close to existing public transport and other services.

The project is also designed to maximise public transport use by creating new pedestrian links to Wynyard and the bus interchange and providing for a second ferry wharf.
