Waterloo Youth Facility Refurbishment

A proposal for a green "crown roof" is among the sustainability features included in the concept design for the refurbishment of the Waterloo Youth Facility, which will be considered by Council's Cultural and Community Services Committee on Monday reports Clover's eNews of 14 November 2008 .

WATERLOO YOUTH FACILITY REFURBISHMENT

Located on the southern end of Waterloo Park, the facility is operated by South Sydney Youth Services. The building was originally an amenities block and has a poor interior layout and limited connection to the park. Refurbishing the building will enable it to meet current community needs, improve its relationship to the park and strengthen youth participation and networks.

The concept design proposes a flexible and efficient office and layout plan, central courtyard to improve environmental performance and a green roof to shroud the building in greenery. Where possible, the building's existing structure and materials will be retained, with natural ventilation and light maximised. High thermal mass materials will be used for passive heating and cooling, and rainwater collected for reuse.

The refurbished facility will incorporate a specialist doctor service and counselling for amphetamine users, the first in NSW, and a counselling and family therapy with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

As the project proceeds, the City will consult with residents and South Sydney Youth Services to develop detailed designs.
