Erskineville supermarket DA returns

A PLAN to convert the abandoned Hive complex at Erskineville into a supermarket has been resurrected after a development application was lodged with Sydney Council reports Robert Burton-Bradley in Central of 7 May 2009.

The new proposal for the Erskineville Rd site is for a 896sq m grocery store, operating from 7am-10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am-10pm on Sunday. Developer Harold Finger who previously lodged a plan for a larger supermarket last year, has lodged the new DA.

The council and the Land and Environment Court rejected the previous supermarket on grounds of traffic impacts and loss of local amenity.

Mr Finger said he and his planners had gone back to the drawing board, undertaking further traffic studies, and decided this was a more workable option for the site.

“The previous DA was for a supermarket far larger that would have required significant rebuilding of the site. This proposal is far smaller and also reduces from 30 to 16 the number of car spaces,” he said.

“This is 60 per cent smaller and is within all the zoning and planning requirements.”

However, resident group Friends of Erskineville Village, which opposed the previous supermarket proposal, argued the new plan is still too large.

“Although it’s smaller, the impact will still be the same,” FEV spokesman Paul Howard said.

“There will be extra pressure during peak hour. We have sought professional planning advice and that has identified that 40 per cent of shopping happens between 3-7pm.”

The DA is on exhibition until May 21.
