New Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras workshops open in Redfern St

The buzz is building for the Mardi Gras Parade 2011, with new workshops powered by Google, opening in Redfern St Redfern. Volunteers are sought to help build the community floats which will light up Oxford St on March 5 reports Kim Shaw in Central on 12 January 1011.

New Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik said the parade aimed for quality not quantity this year and a collaborative approach was being taken with the thousands of people who wanted get involved.
For the first time the parade will be curated by consultant creative director, Ignatius Jones and workshop consultant Jane Becker, with the campaign moniker of ``say something’’ – aimed to reflect many salient topics.
Floats will support a cohesive artistic vision and it is hoped the creative standard of the parade which reach new heights.
Some 140 floats will take part.
All the Mardi Gras community parade floats will be built in the Redfern workshops, for the first time being sponsored by Google and with help from Sydney Council.
Anyone handy with a drill, good at marshalling crowds or dying fabric is encouraged to contact the workshop. Donations of materials and tools, wood, sequins, satin or leather are also sought.
New Mardi Gras co-chair Pete Urmson urged people to get involved.
``If you’re a parade entrant, come and check out the space and have a chat to our workshop team: It could mean that your float could move from fabulous to iconic.”
Last year the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade attracted an audience of 300,000.

**Expressions of interest for parade floats are due by Friday January 14.

**On Sunday January 16 a celebratory sausage sizzle will be held at the workshops, 107 Redfern St, to introduce the team. All are welcome. Proceeds go to the Luncheon Club. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will bless the workshop space and drag Kings and Queens will meet and greet. Workshop doors open at midday on Sunday.
