State Election – March 24th 2007
by REDWatch, last updated: Jan 27, 2007 11:11 AM
Boundary Changes for the 2007 election will see the State seat of Heffron move north to take in all of Redfern east of the rail corridor and north to Cleveland Street. To the west of the railway corridor the remaining part of Redfern and Darlington will become part of the State seat of Marrickville. The former seat of Bligh (now renamed Sydney) is pushed to the North of Cleveland Street and will no longer cover any of the suburbs of Redfern and Darlington as it did previously. For the 2007 state election REDWatch will concentrate its coverage on the seats of Heffron and Marrickville. Any issues raised in surrounding electorates, or by parities in the upper house not running locally will be either dealt with in the media section of the site or in the general election page. A small map (JPG 94 Kb) of Changes in State Electoral Boundaries for 2007 Election can be found on the REDWatch website at http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/maps/Changed%20Electoral%20Boundaries.jpg/download. Full details of all boundaries, enrolment procedures etc can be found at http://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/home .

Indigenous Employment Strategy at Risk
by REDWatch, last updated: Jan 21, 2007 11:34 AM
Indigenous Australians have not benefited from recent high employment rates to the same extent as other Australians. The high participation rate in the Indigenous based Community Development Employment Project programs (CDEP) shows that, while many Indigenous Australians want to work, barriers prevent them from obtaining mainstream employment. by REDWatch, last updated: Jan 05, 2007 04:31 PM
On January 3rd Railcorp Office of Rail Heritage advised 3801 Ltd that they plan to transfer eight of the heritage rail carriages used by 3801 Ltd to the Rail Transport Museum. The transfer is planned for Tuesday 9th January 2007. The carriages nominated includes carriages which are needed by 3801 Ltd to operate their newly advertised heritage rail trips in January and February 2007 but exclude other Heritage carriages such as the Commissioners Carriage will stay at the Large. Friends of Eveleigh have expressed concerns about the lack of suitable undercover storage for the carriages and the lack of bush fire protection for heritage items at Thirlmere. Below we have reproduced the letter sent by RailCorp to 3801 Ltd concerning the transfer.

Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP)
by REDWatch, last updated: Dec 15, 2006 04:10 PM
Redfern has had a CDEP project for the last 20 years. It has helped many Aboriginal people get into the regular job market as well as provided opportunities for many others to contribute to their community by undertaking socially useful work in the local community. On 6 November 2006 the Federal Government announced that CDEP would cease operating in urban areas and that it would be replaced by a new scheme that would be better suited to the labour market as it is at its strongest in 30 years. The proposed changes to CDEP will impact on Redfern Waterloo and hence we have collected some information on the proposed changes and the moves by some in the community to lobby for retention of the CDEP programmes in the area.
