REDWatch Meeting Sunday 24th July at Factory Community Centre
Lawson Street Health Centre Consultation
REDWatch Plan Working Group to prepare submission on housing
REDWatch Meeting Sunday 24th July at Factory Community Centre
Robert Domm the CEO of the Redfern Waterloo Authority will be the guest speaker at the REDWatch meeting this Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come along and get an update on what is happening in the RWA. REDWatch has moved its meetings to The Factory, 67 Raglan Street Waterloo. The Factory is closer to the centre of the Redfern-Waterloo area and it should be easier for more people to attend.
Lawson Street Health Centre Consultation
Consultations are continuing into the proposed Lawson Street Health Centre in the face of solid opposition to its location from many quarters. We understand that the vast bulk of people talking to the consultants recognize the need for harm minimisation and for improved services to injecting drug users. Among the questions that the consultants are trying to address is how and where these services should be provided if they are not to be delivered through the proposed centre in Lawson Street. Continuing the needle bus in its current location is not considered a viable long term solution but few are offering suggestions for how these services can be more effectively delivered. The consultant would be pleased to hear from people who have workable suggestions about how these services can be delivered in the area. You can contact the consultants by emailing rwconsultation@themillergroup.com.au or telephoning 0421 329 924.

REDWatch Plan Working Group to prepare submission on housing
The REDWatch RW Plan Working Group is looking to prepare a submission to the RWA on Housing in the RW Plan. Having already prepared a statement about how REDWatch would like to see the Plan developed http://www.redwatch.org.au/links/REDWatch%20Plan%20Statement%20050531.pdf, the REDWatch Plan group would like to outline what they would like to see the Plan outline in one important area. Housing has been chosen as it is very much at the centre of the services and infrastructure web, both of which are the responsibility of the RWA. There is concern that the RWA’s pull back from considering the future of public housing redevelopment in the early stages of the RWA’s activities may mean that DoH redevelopments in the meantime, such as that planned for Elizabeth Street, will not meet the guarantees made by the RWA to public tenants. There is also concern that unless any redevelopment of public housing is planned well in advance it may not be possible to keep public tenants in the area during and after the eventual redevelopment. In the discussion with Kristina Keneally at the last REDWatch meeting the increasing need for aged / hospital and supported accommodation in the area was also discussed. A further housing element which the NSW Government clearly put on the RWA agenda was affordable housing (see also Mark Skelsey’s recent article on Judith Yate’s research at http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15986836-1242,00.html). This is also an issue for many students who are being forced out of close proximity to the area’s education establishments. All this points to housing being an important local issue needing a integrated response from the RWA in the RW Plan. If you have any suggestions for what REDWatch should include in the submission being considered please email your comments to Geoff Turnbull at turnbullfamily@stassen.com.au .
The Oval discussions between City of Sydney Council and various interested parties continue with consideration of the Council officers’ recommendations now being delayed until August 15. Over last weekend it looked as if Council was looking at retaining capacity on Redfern Oval of 12,000 (with approximately 1000 undercover and some 5000 to 6000 seats all up) - which was similar to the current capacity. This proposal had the Oval surrounded by a 10 ft fence of a type similar to Erskineville Public School or Centennial Park. Within a couple of days however Council was talking about limiting the size to approx 8,000 seats all up with no fence, but with the ability to put up a temporary fence if required. Given the distance between these two options and the proximity of July 25th when the relevant council committee was to re-look at the Oval, it is not surprising that council committee consideration has been further delayed.
Our Park who wants the oval opened up, but still able to be used for active recreation and the Aboriginal knockout, say they are finding it difficult to get the CFMEU and Aboriginal groups supporting South’s to discuss any other possibilities that might meet their needs. People seem to be in denial that anyone would object to Piggins' proposals. Any reading of the initial council officer’s report on the consultation will see that there was significant opposition to George’s proposal in the community consultation and it will be difficult to see how council can not be influenced in part by this. The May Council report can be found on the revamped council website at http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Council/MeetingsAndCommittees/2005/environment_230505.asp#reports .
