Homes NSW to bring Tenant Participation and Community Engagement inhouse

In the following statement on 27 September 2024, Homes NSW announced that from January 2025 that Homes NSW will take over responsibility for Tenant Participation and Community Engagement (TPCE) activities. This role has previously been provided by independent third parties who has been responsible for facilitating tenant voices. For the last five years TPCE has been run statewide by Mission Australia for government. Prior to that program tenant participation was facilitated locally by Inner Sydney Voice who ran the Tenant Participation Resource Service (TPRS) and Counterpoint Community Services who ran the Redfern Waterloo Housing Communities Program Project (CDP). A complimentary project which was responsible for the community gardens, the University of NSW Community Development Program (UNSW CDP) ended in 2017.

Dear colleague,

I write to inform you of some upcoming changes to the way Homes NSW delivers tenant participation and community engagement activity across NSW.

Since 2018, Mission Australia has been a valued partner delivering tenant participation initiatives on behalf of the Department of Communities and Justice (Housing Services).

With the establishment of Homes NSW, we have reviewed the current tenant and community participation approach. I firmly believe that working with our tenants and stakeholders and ensuring that they have a voice into our policy and operations is central to delivering services.

For this reason, we have made the decision to bring tenant participation in-house, forming a new unit within Homes NSW team that will coordinate tenant and community engagement and elevate tenant voices like never before. The current contract with Mission Australia will end as of December 31, 2024.

There are many valuable programs and local groups driving tenant participation across the state. We will work closely with Mission Australia to support the transition of management arrangements.

Leading this transition work on behalf of Homes NSW will be our Director, Partnerships and Communications, Adam Thompson. Adam manages public affairs and engagement for Homes NSW and will work hard with key stakeholders to ensure that what we deliver meets community needs, while also establishing a clear channel for tenant voices to be heard when decisions are being made.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mission Australia, their staff and the services that have been engaged over the last six years for their contribution to tenant participation.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please contact Adam Thompson at adam.thompson@homes.nsw.gov.au

Kind regards,

Rebecca Pinkstone
CEO, Homes NSW
