by REDWatch, last updated: Nov 01, 2008 10:58 AM
ATP Blacksmith Guido Gouverneur looks at the coming need for rail infra-structure and argues it is shortsighted to sell off what was put in place by an earlier generation.
Background to ATP Heritage Issues
by REDWatch, last updated: Nov 01, 2008 10:50 AM
This background on the ATP heritage issues was presented to the Eveleigh heritage meeting on 28th October 2008 by Wrought Artworks. It outlines the history of the blacksmith and the failure of the government to impliment the Conservation Management Plan which was supposed to "protect its cultural significance, continue its useful life and contribute to the activities of Eveleigh as both an engineering and educational resource".
ATP Heritage Issues to be Addressed
by REDWatch, last updated: Nov 01, 2008 10:36 AM
Following are dot points on turning the tables on the lack of or incorrect conservation approaches & practices in and around the Locomotive Workshop building & The Large Erecting Shop and some ideas on how to achieve an Industrial Heritage experience for visitors. This is part of the "Operation Turn-table" presentation by Wrought Artworks (WAW) at the October 2008 Eveleigh heritage meeting.
ATP Heritage Destruction by Neglect
by REDWatch, last updated: Nov 01, 2008 10:02 AM
The Conservation Management Plan in June 1996 provided a catalogue of all the significant heritage items (over 200). It detailed their significance, current condition and detailed a conservation policy and maintainence schedule for each item. The Technology Park was given a heritage grant to implement the the CMP but did not undertake the required work. This document from 2000 compared the Conservation Management Plan recommendations with the state of some of the equipment that had been moved outdoors and was being destroyed by neglect. The only change to date for some of the out door equipment has been that some of the items have been moved further away from where they should be to make way for the new Channel 7 building. A commitment to preserving and appropriatly presenting the items in the CMP would provide a significant heritage attraction at Eveleigh. (PDF Scan 2.2MB).
A Tour of the Twelve Listed heritage items
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 10:45 PM
This is an extract from Brian Dunnett and Robert Haworth's paper "The fate of Eveleigh: more of ‘Ugly Sydney’ or an enhancement of the greatest rail heritage site in the world?" The paper looks at the twelve sites recognised by the RWA accross Eveleigh as a walking tour.
A Real Heritage Walk
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 10:05 PM
Here we are not talking about the RWA's "Heritage Walk pedestrian and bike bridge" we are interested in what someone visiting Eveleigh might be able to see and visit on either a self guided tour or with a tour guide. This paints a picture of what the site has to offer to an overseas train enthusiast visiting Australia's global city as well as what it might offer to a local visitor or school seeking to understand the former rail yards and their significance to the area, the state and Australia's labour history.
Remembering Eveleigh's Workers
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 10:02 PM
Much of NSW's industrial and labour history is linked to the the Eveleigh rail yards. A workers register was started in 1999 with a proposal for a Worker's Wall on the site from that time now being investigated by the RWA. There is however not just a need for a Wall to remember the workers there is also a need for a repository of memorabilia and oral history to capture and convey some of the stories and social history of the people who worked and lived in the area and who made the rail ways work. Here you will find some ideas of how this element could be incorporated into a heritage interpretation for Eveleigh.
North Eveleigh's Heritage
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 10:00 PM
The central Carriage Works building on North Eveleigh has been renovated to become a contemporary performing arts space while preserving the grandeur of the former workshop. Other key sites here include the Paint Shop, the Chief Mechanical Engineers building and the Telecommunications buildings among others. This site is currently going up for sale and redevelopment and there is a need to ensure that this part of the heritage precinct retains key elements of the rail yards. The current two page Heritage Interpretation Strategy for the site is judged inadequate by heritage groups with an interest in the site. Here you can find out more about the heritage tourism potential of North Eveleigh.
Heritage Listings & Significance
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 09:51 PM
The Former Eveleigh Rail yards were considered of world importance by the Smithsonian Institute and a number of listings on parts of the site appear on the NSW Heritage Register. In 2007 and 2008 attempts have been made to obtain National Heritage Listing for the Large Erecting Shop. In both these years the Large also featured in the National Trust's 10 most at risk heritage sites in Australia. Details of listings can be found here.
The Large Erecting Shop
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 31, 2008 09:45 PM
Under the RWA proposed zoning the Large Erecting Shop could be replaced by an up to 12 storey building and the current heritage rail tours, maintenance and training being undertaken from the site could have been lost. There has been a long campaign to save the this operational heritage. RailCorps decision in 2008 to retain the building for heritage rail use has been welcomed. Properly managed the "Large" could not only be an important operational heritage site but it could also be a significant heritage tourism attraction.
Towards an Eveleigh Heritage & Tourism Strategy
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 30, 2008 11:26 PM
To make the most of the heritage and tourism potential of the site there is a need for Government, Heritage Interests, businesses and residents to develop a comprehensive plan for the Eveleigh site. After reviewing the RWA's heritage strategy heritage interests, local businesses and residents called on the Minister for Redfern Waterloo to establish a committee / round table of government bodies and interested parties to develop a Heritage and Tourism Strategy for Eveleigh. Here you will find information relating to this strategy, starting with the RWA's current two page proposal.
Eveleigh's Tourism Potential
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 30, 2008 10:13 PM
With its mixture of active heritage in the Blacksmith Shop and the Large ant the retention of many of the former railway buildings and associated manufacturing equipment Eveleigh has great potential as a rail heritage tourism destination. The RWA's Heritage Interpretation Strategy envisages "Use of the Heritage Walk Bridge, the Baggage Carriage and Coffee shop as part of an organised Heritage Walk through the North Eveleigh and ATP sites. This will use audio discs available for hire as well as tours organized by volunteer guides". Here you can find information about Eveleigh's tourism potential.
ATP Blacksmith
by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 30, 2008 09:57 PM
As has been shown by the attendance at the Open Day to save the Operational Heritage Blacksmith in the Australian Technology Park, there is substantial interest in this site which preserves former Eveleigh rail yard equipment and operational skills. Having fought to preserve an operating Blacksmith the challenge is to turn this area into an important attraction within Eveleigh. You can read more about the Blacksmith and the Campaign to save this operation here on the ATP part of the website.

by REDWatch, last updated: Oct 30, 2008 09:50 PM
Mr John O’Neill AO undertook a Review of Tourism in NSW on behalf of the NSW Government in mid 2007. A number of submissions to the review argued the importance of maintaining the "Large" and Eveleigh as part of NSW's heritage rail infrastructure. Here you can read about some of the ideas presented to the Tourism review about the important role of Eveleigh and rail tourism.
