GREENS - Heffron - Is Labor Selling Public Land to Fund Political Advertising
Ben Spies-Butcher, Greens candidate for Heffron, today questioned the timing of the Redfern Waterloo Authority’s (RWA) latest update, which was delivered to the mailboxes of local residents this week says this media release dated 22 February 2007 from the Greens.
“ Four weeks before a state election Frank Sartor's
Redfern Waterloo Authority, which is a public agency, has letterboxed the area
with an update that features a picture of the Premier and the local member on
the front cover” Mr Spies-Butcher said.
“ When the Redfern Waterloo Authority was established,
we were promised quarterly public meetings to keep residents informed. To date
there has only been one meeting, and that was limited to public housing tenants.
This is despite numerous calls from resident action groups for information about
the RWA’s plans for development in the area.
“ Yet, the RWA’s community publicity process suddenly springs into action a few weeks before the election.
“ Yet, the RWA’s community publicity process suddenly springs into action a few weeks before the election.
“ The real tragedy is that unlike other government
advertising, this leaflet is potentially being paid for by the sale of public
land. The RWA is a self-financing corporation. When it was set up, the
Government stated that it would cover costs through the rent and sale of the
land under its control.
“ Of course you would not know that from the flyer.
There is no mention of the sale of tens of millions of dollars worth of public
land, including the privatisation of Rachel Foster Hospital. Nor is there
mention that the upgrade of the station and the community health centre are
being financed by these sales of public land.
“ There is a legitimate role for community updates from
the RWA. But letterboxing a flyer with the Premier and local member on the front
cover, four weeks from an election and after the Labor Election Campaign launch,
is clearly political.
“ The Greens call on the Labor Party to fund this
blatant political advertising and reimburse the RWA. Redfern’s public land
should not be sold to fund Labor’s election campaign” Mr Spies-Butcher
said.
