Preschools fee rise to hurt families - including Darlington
PRINCIPALS of the state's 100 public preschools predict a mass exodus of children next year due to government plans to increase fees by up to $40 a day reports this article in the Sunday Telegraph of 23 October 2011 by Laura Speranza.
AHC to receive Federal Affordable Housing Support
The Aboriginal Housing Company’s application for Affordable housing support under the Gillard Governments National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) has been successful. Local Member Tanya Plibersek met with the AHC on 20th October to announce that Three projects in Redfem will deliver 114 new affordable rental properties, including 62 in the Pemulwuy Project. AHC's Mick Mundine and DeiCorp's Project Manager Greg Colbran briefed Ms Plibersek on the AHC’s plans which are expected to be with the department of Planning for public exhibition within weeks. Repeal of Redfern Waterloo Authority
In an email to Ministerial Advisory Committee members on 19th October 2011, the RWA advised that the NSW Government introduced the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011 on Tuesday, 18 October 2011. A link to the Bill can be found in the text of the email below.

Brad Hazzard Speach on introduction of Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011
On 18 October 2011 Planning Minister Brad Hazzard introduced the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011 to the NSW Legislative Assembly. In his speech below he outlines that the Bill will transfer certain functions of the RWA to the SMDA including the operation of the ATP. Planning consents below $10m will be transferred to the City of Sydney Council. The SMDA will be responsible for implementing The Redfern Waterloo Plan and collecting developer contributions. The Repeal Bill removes the "switching off" of the Heritage Act provisions in The Redfern Waterloo Act and preserves the provision that requires the Aboriginal Housing Company and other relevant representatives of the Aboriginal community to be consulted in relation to the Block. Housing NSW - Redfern and Waterloo Preliminary Masterplanning - Areas of Responsibility
Housing NSW released the following list showing the areas of responsibility of various people associated with the HNSW Redfern and Waterloo Preliminary Masterplan on 20 March 2012. This updated an earlier list of responsibilities from 21 September 2011. HNSW have undertaken to update details on the list as changes take place so residents are aware of the roles played by various staff and advisors involved with the project. The release of the updated list followed a request by REDWatch as a result of a number of changes over the last few months.
From Sky to Shining
DARLINGTON: Darlington Indigenous Dance Ensemble, from Darlington Public School, is proving to play a vital role in strengthening the bond between Indigenous kids and their elders. The dancing ensemble has been active in the school for many years, with the aim of retaining and performing the traditional dances of Indigenous peoples. The 18 students, between the ages of 7 and 12, perform traditional and modern dances from all over New South Wales. The kids are also encouraged to connect with their family roots through stories, which are presented through dance Reports Malcolm Weihao Luo in the October 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
Support for memorial to Trevor Davies
Heffron MP, Kristina Keneally, has expressed her support for the establishment of a permanent memorial to Trevor Davies at Redfern or Chippendale reports the October 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
Waterloo Community Centre update
WATERLOO: The newly refurbished Waterloo Community Centre located at the corner of Cope and Phillip streets, reopened in August with a fresh initiative for providing local residents with a coordinated range of activities, programs and referral services. The Centre is open between Monday and Friday each week Reports Reece Meredith in the October 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
Urbanest student housing
It looks like the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) might not be the only supplier of commercial student accommodation to the west of Redfern Station. Student accommodation company Urbanest, which recently completed student accommodation in Quay Street Ultimo, is lining up for a new development at 157 Cleveland Street reports the October 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
Minister promises greater transparency
The promise of greater transparency under the new State Government was made at a recent meeting between REDWatch Co-ord Members Michael Shreenan, Irene Doutney and Geoff Turnbull and the Planning and Infrastructure Minister Brad Hazzard, who has oversight of the RWA/SMDA reports the October 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.

Lies, damn lies and statistics – and consultation
During the BEP2 consultation the RWA produced a feedback form and Question 4 read: “The highest buildings in Waterloo (Matavai and Turanga) are 30 storeys. The highest buildings in Redfern (Poets Corner) are 17 storeys. Draft BEP 2 proposes heights of 4-12 storeys. Uni ‘tsunami’ a concern, says Council
DARLINGTON: On Monday August 1 the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, and City of Sydney Councillors, Meredith Burgmann, Irene Doutney and John McInerney, visited Darlington at the invitation of local community group, RAIDD (Residents Acting In Darlington’s Defence). They came to see and hear the local residents’ concerns about the proposed developments by the University of Sydney which threaten to overwhelm this small community in the City of Villages reports the September 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
