Housing NSW Waterloo Update September 2011

In late September 2011 Housing NSW distributed new Update newsletters to public tenants in Redfern and Waterloo. Below is the combined text of the Redfern & Waterloo Updates. When the pdf's of both are available from Housing NSW we will post them.

Great turnout at Redfern Waterloo Planning Expo

After a wet, cold week, 300 residents took up Housing NSW's invitation to attend the Planning Expo on 20 August to explore options and ideas about what their neighbourhood could look like in the future.

"Over the last 18 months Housing NSW has worked with social housing residents to build community understanding of planning and urban design issues so that they will be better able to comment on and get involved in planning for the future of the area," said Housing NSW's General Manager for Central Sydney, Kathy Roil.

"The turn out at the Expo builds on the response to the public exhibition of the Built Environment Plan 2 earlier this year. Over 500 feedback forms and 28 written submissions were received by the Redfern Waterloo Authority - most of them from public housing residents."

"The Planning Expo marks the start of work on the preparation of a Preliminary Master Plan that is supported by the Australian Government's Housing Affordability Fund," said Kathy Roil.

Residents put forward their ideas during four consultation activities with many stating that future development should build on the strong community spirit, meet local needs and continue safety improvements.

Many said they would like to see public areas and buildings that are well designed and maintained with an emphasis on safe, usable and active green spaces.

Residents said they wanted better access to the area with good, regular public transport and improved access at Redfern station. Many residents also contributed their ideas towards planning for increased cycling activities.

Work on the Preliminary Master Plan will carry through until mid 2012. Housing NSW will continue to consult with the community throughout this period. Consultation will wrap-up in March 2012 with a

Community Design workshop - a hands-on planning process attended by residents, planners, landowners and stakeholders.

Once completed, the Preliminary Master Plan will form the basis for further planning of the renewal process.

Four workshops and bus tours are planned to look at connections and local facilities, streets, parks and open spaces, and building design. Interested residents should contact Martin Clark by calling 9268 3443 or emailing RedfernWaterloo@facs.nsw.gov.au

Four local social housing residents were the lucky winners of the prize draw for the four $100 WISH cards.
