Commitment to business growth in Redfern

The City of Sydney has announced $130,000 of funding to help sustainable business growth, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, in two key areas – Redfern and the Green Square Town Centre.

Redfern continues to experience business growth and is becoming more known as a retail destination. The South Sydney Business Chamber represents more than 2,700 businesses across the South Sydney region and promotes sustainable business growth through commercial, cultural and creative opportunities.

Major projects the Chamber will focus on in Redfern and Green Square over the next three years include:
• Supporting the development of local village shopping precincts in Redfern and Green Square with a variety of programs and campaigns;
• Establishing a mentoring and business to business development program;
• Providing a special focus on the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses in the area;
• Building a 'skills register' to encourage new employment and trade in the region;
• Developing 'welcome' and 'relocation' packs for both businesses and residents;
• Encourage shops to decorate and enhance their window dressings; and
• Maintaining and expanding the Chamber's website as a central source of information for businesses and residents in South Sydney.

This grant was awarded under the City of Sydney’s Village Business Partnership Program. More information on the South Sydney Business Chamber can be found at www.ssbchamber.com.au

Providing technology for local school

Alexandria Park Community School has formed a partnership with Australian Technology Park Sydney Limited (ATPSL) to give local school children access to laptop computers.

‘Bridging the gap between the digital and social divide’ aims to provide laptop computers for each student at Alexandria Park Community School to promote technology and education. There are currently 370 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 at the school with 170 laptops provided through federal government funding and private donations. The school has fundraised $87,000 for another 200 computers but needs support for an additional $30,000 to reach their target.

ATPSL is providing support for this initiative and will match Australian Technology Park tenant donations dollar for dollar, up to the amount of $15,000.

Alexandria Park Community School has a large number of Aboriginal students and other children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The aim of this initiative is to improve each student’s learning outcomes through the use of technology.
