PCYC

With the involvement in November 2005 of the PCYC with the Rabbitohs in a proposal for Redfern Oval there has been much confusion regarding the situation of the PCYC in the Elizabeth Street Redevelopment in the absence of an amended Master Plan.

In May 2005 the Department of Housing wrote to tenants advising them that the PCYC would be included in the readvertising for the development. A copy of this letter which also deals with the retention of the original Master Plan has been reproduced on this site.

On 10 June 2005 in Clover's eNews No. 250 under the heading "SOUTH SYDNEY PCYC IN LIMBO" Clover Moore said:
The Department of Housing has put the future of South Sydney Police Citizens Youth Club in limbo, after adding the site to public housing land planned for private redeveloped in Elizabeth Street, Redfern.

The Department wrote to local tenants in late May, telling them that the redevelopment would be postponed due to the lack of tenders. The letter also stated that the PCYC site would be included in the project in order to help attract more interest.

Comments made by Member for Heffron Kristina Keneally to a Bligh ALP public housing forum a few months ago and comments made by Department of Housing officials to local residents as late as November 2005 indicate that this situation prevails.

The final outcome of course will be dependent on the Department of Housing finding an developer interested to do the development with the PCYC site included. The Member for Heffron has said that the NSW government is committed to supporting the PCYC wherever it seeks to locate.

REDWatch still understands that if the PCYC site is to be developed that the NSW Government of the developer will either build replacement facilities within the new development or provide them in the surrounding area.
