- Council Support for the Pemulwuy Project
- The Aboriginal Housing Company’s Pemulwuy Project has moved another step closer, with a Council Committee recommending that Council grant owner’s consent for a Development Application to be submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure reports this extract from Clover's eNews of Friday 2 December - No 575. - SMDA Releases Details of Studies for redfern & Waterloo
- The Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority has released the details of the studies proposed for Redfern and Waterloo over the next few months. The statement advises that "The SMDA will progressively advise on its website of the appointment of consultants and welcomes feedback from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders on key issues which they would like considered in the relevant study by the SMDA. This way, SMDA will be able to ensure key issues are considered appropriately and in a timely manner." The full text of the statement is below:
- Redfern-Waterloo Authority Transition Fact Sheet
- Below is the text of the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Transition Fact Sheet released by the RWA on 2 November 2011 advising of the changes within the RWA's activities as a result of the winding up of the RWA.
- Pemulwuy housing made more affordable
- REDFERN: On October 20 Tanya Plibersek, Federal Member for Sydney, met with Mick Mundine at the office of the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) following its successful application under the Gillard Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS). The scheme funds affordable rental housing, reducing rental costs for low and moderate income households and encouraging investment and innovative affordable housing reports the November 2011 issues of the South Sydney Herald.
- Revitalisation of Abercrombie Street
- The City of Sydney plans to transform Abercrombie Street, Darlington, into a safe and inviting public area and they are doing a short consulation until 31 October 2011 including a session with the Plans at Tripod on Wednesday 26 October between 4 - 7pm. The details including the links to the proposal are below.
- AHC to receive Federal Affordable Housing Support
- The Aboriginal Housing Company’s application for Affordable housing support under the Gillard Governments National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) has been successful. Local Member Tanya Plibersek met with the AHC on 20th October to announce that Three projects in Redfem will deliver 114 new affordable rental properties, including 62 in the Pemulwuy Project. AHC's Mick Mundine and DeiCorp's Project Manager Greg Colbran briefed Ms Plibersek on the AHC’s plans which are expected to be with the department of Planning for public exhibition within weeks. Below is the text of the media release issued by Ms Plibersek.
- Brad Hazzard Speach on introduction of Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011
- On 18 October 2011 Planning Minister Brad Hazzard introduced the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011 to the NSW Legislative Assembly. In his speech below he outlines that the Bill will transfer certain functions of the RWA to the SMDA including the operation of the ATP. Planning consents below $10m will be transferred to the City of Sydney Council. The SMDA will be responsible for implementing The Redfern Waterloo Plan and collecting developer contributions. The Repeal Bill removes the "switching off" of the Heritage Act provisions in The Redfern Waterloo Act and preserves the provision that requires the Aboriginal Housing Company and other relevant representatives of the Aboriginal community to be consulted in relation to the Block. - Repeal of Redfern Waterloo Authority
- In an email to Ministerial Advisory Committee members on 19th October 2011, the RWA advised that the NSW Government introduced the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill 2011 on Tuesday, 18 October 2011. A link to the Bill can be found in the text of the email below.
- Crime in Redfern a result of outsiders not locals
- Redfern has a bad reputation for crime but residents are not the ones committing them; it’s their friends reports Una Butorac in City News on 22 September 2011.
- HNSW Preliminary Masterplan - Updates for residents - Community Facilities - 17 Sept 2011
- This month the Redfern Waterloo Preliminary Master Plan Project is focusing on connections in and around the neighbourhoods reports an Update from Housing NSW on 17 September 2011. Here REDWatch has combined information from two HNSW Updates on this months topic as well as details of this months bus tour and workshops on the topic of Connections and Local Facilities.
- Student Accommodation for 157 Cleveland Street
- A proposal for student accommodation at 157 Cleveland Street has seen student accommodation provider urbanest commenced door-knocking and letter boxing (of the letter below) for the 157 Cleveland St project on 30 August 2011. This lead up to a community meeting on Saturday 17 September 2011 in the Redfern Community Centre at 9.30am. The plans being considered are on the urbanest website at the link at the bottom of this item.
- Transfer of land in Redfern to the Aboriginal Housing Company from Council
- The City proposes to transfer this land to the Aboriginal Housing Company, to help provide housing and other facilities for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, for $20. The transfer of land for a nominal sum reflects the City of Sydney’s support of the project. The transfer of land to the Aboriginal Housing Company proposal will be on public exhibition 1 August to 5 September 2011 states this notice for Council of 10 July 2011.
- RWA Releases BEP2 Stakeholder Engagement Report
- The Redfern-Waterloo Authority (RWA) has released the Stakeholder Engagement Report for the Built Environment Plan Stage 2 (BEP 2). The report prepared by Mediate Today, the RWA response and a media release have been placed on the RWA website on 22 July 2011. Below you will find a link to the documents. - Sydney Uni Abercrombie Street Update - 7 July 2011
- Sydney University Director of Campus Infrastructure and Services, Colin Rockliff, issued the following update on Sydney University revising their plans for the Abercrombie Street campus on 7 July 2011. The next meeting to discuss these plans between the University and Residents is 9am 19th July at the University Services building.
- Redfern mourns the death of community activist Trevor Davies
- The Redfern community is mourning the death of REDwatch founding member Trevor Davies following his death on Tuesday. Mr Davies will be remembered for founding and editing the South Sydney Herald and for his community activism and commitment to social justice writes Tara Blancato in the City News of 16 June 2011.
- SMDA Receives Urban Renewal Brief from Department of Planning
- The SMDA has received its brief for both the Redfern and Waterloo and Granville areas under the State Environment Planning Policy (Urban Renewal) 2010. The briefs set out the areas the SMDA is required by the study to investigate and make recommendations upon.
