NEWS
Redfern chosen for Greater Sydney Partnership launch
The Greater Sydney Partnership which was created to promote Sydney as Australia’s only global city has selected Redfern as the location to launch its exciting initiative. Held at Carriageworks, the Partnership acknowledged the work of Aunty Beryl and Yaama Dhiyaan for the valuable and positive contribution she and the organisation make to the city of Sydney. Founding Chairman Peter Holmes à Court will be working with up to 70 organisations as part a marketing alliance that will aim to more effectively market the city. The Partnership evolved from the Brand Sydney initiative, which now forms part of the new organisation.
New ‘What’s On’ Calender
The Redfern-Waterloo Authority website now features a “What’s On” Calendar to update the community on upcoming events, forums, meetings and other occasions happening in the Redfern-Waterloo area (including Eveleigh, Darlington and parts of Alexandria). This is a calendar to be populated for the community’s benefit. Visit www.redfernwaterloo.com.au under the Community house to “What’s On”. To add your event to the calendar, email the event details (including any flyers, briefs, summaries and contact details) to Fiona Graham at fiona.graham@rwa.nsw.gov.au.
Generation One function at Yaama
Yaama Dhiyaan continues to attract significant events to the local area with a business and stakeholder breakfast for the Generation One campaign initiated by business leader Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest in March 2010. The campaign is aimed at abolishing the disadvantage between Aboriginal people and other Australians. Around 130 business representatives, including James Packer, Ryan Stokes and about 90 other business leaders and stakeholders were served Indigenous cuisine from the Yaama Dhiyaan menu. The event shows that Yaama Dhiyaan is making real progress in the areas of Aboriginal employment and cuisine. Andrew Forrest praised Yaama and the Les Tobler construction program’s efforts in promoting Aboriginal employment and even got his hands dirty working with the construction trainees in the Les Tobler centre.
Heritage update
The Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce will meet again on Tuesday, 25 May 2010 to discuss membership and potential projects raised during the RWA’s collection of nominations in February and March. The Taskforce is finalising its indigenous membership and is focused on achieving a balance of representation from the various stakeholders in the Redfern-Waterloo area. Nominated projects, including a Dictionary of Sydney, Office of Rail Heritage, the Performance Space, Aboriginal Connections with Eveleigh, the LES War Memorial, Walking Tours, Eora journey, and the Alexandria Park Community School, were discussed individually, with the RWA initiating activity on the majority of suggestions. To find more about the Heritage Taskforce, heritage projects, the terms of reference, Taskforce membership, and a point of contact for Heritage matters, please visit the RWA website (Heritage section).
Graffiti Action Day
Local residents in Redfern-Waterloo took part in Graffiti Action Day, an opportunity for communities to engage in the removal of graffiti in their local area. This event, a first in Australia and driven by a partnership between Keep Australia Beautiful and the NSW Government, saw residents supporting non-government and community run facilities by repairing damage caused by graffiti. Activities took place in George St, Waterloo and Morehead St in Redfern.
Farmers’ markets on SBS and in Sydney Magazine
The Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets appeared on SBS News recently with a number of stallholders and farmers featuring in the report. In addition, the markets appeared in Sydney Magazine’s “Fifty reasons to love Sydney” article which was published on 24 March 2010.
