DEVELOPMENT NEWS

BEP2 open for community consultation

The Draft Built Environment Plan Stage 2 (BEP 2) for Redfern and Waterloo has been released for community feedback. BEP 2 is a proposed planning framework to continue the renewal of Housing NSW sites in the Redfern and Waterloo area including South Eveleigh over a 20-25 year timeframe to ensure improved social housing and to help create a more sustainable community.

This proposed renewal will provide better residential amenity and a more sustainable mix of social, private and affordable housing within the sites.

The proposed Draft BEP 2 could result in approximately 3,500 additional dwellings in the whole Redfern and Waterloo area, providing improved housing for current residents as well as providing new residents with the opportunities offered by this central and accessible location.

The aim is to achieve a mix of 60% private and affordable housing dwellings and 40% social housing. There will also be an overall increase in affordable housing as approximately 10% of all dwellings will be affordable housing.

There will be no loss of social housing in the Sydney Government Area as a result of BEP 2 – all current tenancies are secure and no current Redfern and Waterloo tenants will be forced to leave their homes.

The redevelopment will take place over a 20-25 timeframe which will result in improved housing, better parks and open spaces, community facilities, shops and an increase in affordable housing.

To read the Draft BEP 2 report and for more information, please visit www.redfernwaterloo.nsw.gov.au/bep2.

NEWS

The new Redfern Brand

The new and exciting Redfern brand was announced at the Return to Redfern game on Saturday, 5 February by Premier and Minister for Redfern-Waterloo, the Hon Kristina Keneally, and Lord Mayor Clover Moore. The Redfern brand is a powerful and significant development to promote Redfern and the surrounding areas of Waterloo, Darlington and Eveleigh as a welcoming place for both business and recreation.

The launch was an exciting day with Redfern ambassadors, merchandise for sale, and the Return to Redfern game itself with South Sydney Rabbitohs taking on the Newtown Jets.

As part of the launch, local businesses and community organisations were invited to a Redfern brand presentation on Wednesday, 9 February at Redfern Town Hall to learn more about the making of the brand and practical tips on how it can be used.

The Redfern brand is an initiative of the Roll Up Redfern Group comprising: City of Sydney, Redfern-Waterloo Authority (RWA), South Sydney Business Chamber (SSBC), REDWatch and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Big Issue moves to Redfern with $1.25 million

The new Sydney headquarters for The Big Issue at Little Eveleigh St in Redfern was officially opened on Friday, 4 February by the Premier and Minister for Redfern Waterloo, the Hon Kristina Keneally. A cheque for $1.25 million marked the occasion to enable The Big Issue to expand its operation and continue to help homeless and marginalised residents of NSW over the next five years. The lease, provided by the Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority, is for a period of up to two years.

The Big Issue provides homeless and vulnerable people with the opportunity to earn an income and be actively included in society. Authorised vendors purchase copies of The Big Issue for $2.50 and sell it on the streets for $5.00, keeping the difference.

There are currently 27,000 homeless people in NSW. The Big Issue has been helping homeless and disadvantaged people for 16 years.

New art space for Weave Youth Services

A new arts space for Weave Youth Services (formerly the South Sydney Youth Services) has been granted by the Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority for The Clothing Store in North Eveleigh.

The sub-licence available for 12 months will enable the arts social enterprise to help support socially excluded people by providing a creative area to produce art and to exhibit and sell work to create an income for the group. The Centre will be staffed by professionally trained art therapists.

Waterloo Green Neighbourhood Project

Security for residents in the six high-rise buildings in Waterloo Green has increased with the construction of a Neighbourhood Link office in each foyer now complete as part of the $12 million Waterloo Green Neighbourhood Project. The offices will operate 24 hours a day with either Neighbourhood Link staff (8.00am to 4.0 pm weekdays) or security personnel on duty.

There will also be 24-hour closed circuit TV monitoring set up and a better photo identification system.

Local community organisation receives $135k grant

The Factory Community Centre has received a $135k community grant to go towards a crime prevention project in partnership with the Redfern-Waterloo Authority. The Community and Cultural Link Project aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and criminal activity through community events, activities and engagement with street drinkers in the Redfern and Waterloo area. The project will provide a range of interventions, supports and activities to strengthen the local community and to build on positive assets to reduce the motivation for criminal activity, with a focus on The Block and Waterloo Green. The program is expected to run for 18 months.

Redfern recognised in Order of Australia Awards

Two prominent Redfern figures have received an Order of Australia in recognition of their contribution to the community. Lucy Turnbull, Board Member of Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority, Redfern-Waterloo Authority, and Australian Technology Park has been honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australian for her contribution to business and commitment to charity including her work for The Redfern Foundation. Helen Campbell received a medal of the Order of Australia for her service to law and to the community of Redfern. Ms Campbell is the Executive Officer for the Women’s Legal Services NSW and former CEO of Redfern Legal Centre.

Eveleigh Market Christmas Banner Winners

The Christmas spirit was alive at Eveleigh Farmers’ Christmas Market in December 2010 with Alexandria Community School being awarded the top prize for the Eveleigh Farmers’ Market Christmas Banner Competition and Darlington Public School being awarded the People’s Choice Award.

Deputy Premier, the Hon Carmel Tebbutt presented the winning schools with their $1000 awards. Life for Koori Kids and the International Grammar School both received a $500 award as runners up.

There were 11 local schools and youth groups from inner south and inner western Sydney whose banners decorated Eveleigh Farmers’ Market as part of the competition to create a festive atmosphere. A student from Darlington Public School read a touching thank you note on the day thanking Eveleigh Market for the opportunity to participate and for the funds that will go towards art materials and books.

Mural planned for Redfern Fire Station

Artwork with messages of fire safety will adorn the Redfern Fire Station as part of the ‘fire safety’ mural competition with the four winning artists recently announced.

With the theme ‘everyone needs a home escape plan’, the artworks by school students ranging from 9-13 years of age will be conveyed by interpretation and painted on a billboard attached to the Redfern Fire Station during Reconciliation Week commencing 27 May 2011. The four winners (Abbey Neilson, 11, from West Wallsend Public School; Byron Arkinstall, 9, and Imogen Anderson, 11, both from Lambton Public School; and Donovan Wilson, 13, from Fairfield Patrician Brothers College) were recently presented with a NSW Fire Brigades plaque and received a Canon Camera prize package. The winners were chosen from a selection panel of local Redfern representatives including: Redfern-Waterloo Authority; City of Sydney; Department of Education and Training; TAFE Eora Centre; Aboriginal Housing Company; Aboriginal Medical Service Metropolitan; Local Aboriginal Land Council; Redfern Community Centre; local elder and Artist Charles ‘Chicka’ Madden; and NSW Fire Brigades.

Innovation Plaza transformed on film

Innovation Plaza at Australian Technology Park was transformed in to a film set in January for the filming of a Japanese commercial.

With over 100 people on site made up of cast, crew and extras, Innovation Plaza was made to look like an antique flea market with a distinct European feel. Interestingly, the market stallholders and the market props were sourced from real market stallholders in Sydney.

The Japanese advertisement for Yebisu beer will be shown on Japanese television only but many tenants and visitors were intrigued to see the transformation of the Plaza firsthand.

Innovation Plaza was a car park not long ago but has been converted to an open space for tenants and visitors to enjoy including showcasing the unique heritage of the Park.

New CEO for CarriageWorks

Lisa Havilah has been appointed the new Chief Executive of CarriageWorks after five years as Director of Campbelltown Arts Centre. During her time at the Campbelltown Arts Centre, visitor numbers jumped from 30,000 to 190,000 a year. Ms Havilah is looking forward to developing a diverse and dynamic program at CarriageWorks.

The RWA welcomes Ms Havilah to the Redfern area and wishes her all the very best for her time at CarriageWorks.
