Bush Tucker pioneer receives award
Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo, a well known Redfern community member and trainer at Yaama Dhiyaan Hospitality Training School, has received an achievement award for her contribution to the local community.
Aunty Beryl received the Education & Long Life Learning Award at the NSW Seniors Week Achievement Awards on 20 March 2011 in recognition for her instrumental role in setting up RWA’s Yaama Dhiyaan, Australia's first and only hospitality college specialising in Indigenous culture and cuisine. Aunty Beryl’s teaching ability and use of bush tucker has been described as 'truly inspirational'. Since the commencement of Yaama Dhiyaan hospitality training program, Aunty Beryl has helped train and find employment for over 160 students.
Domestic & family violence forum
Over 75 service providers and community members attended Negotiating the Family Law System forum on 29 March 2011. Organised by the Inner City Domestic Violence Action Group and the Redfern-Waterloo Family Violence Task Force, the forum’s aim was to improve responses for women who are escaping domestic and family violence and who need advice and referral to family law services.
A key barrier for women leaving violent relationships is their fear of what will happen to their children. The forum provided service providers with more information and training on how to advise victims of domestic and family violence to improve their access to the family law system.
Held at Redfern Town Hall, organisations in attendance included St George Domestic Violence Services, Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre, Sydney City Family Relationship Centre, the Inner City Community Legal Centre and NSW Legal Aid Commission.
Draft BEP 2 Thank You Barbeques
Thank You Barbeques were held by the RWA on 28 & 29 March 2011 in Redfern and Waterloo as a token of appreciation for the social housing community who provided feedback on the draft Built Environment Plan 2 plan. We apologise that the barbeques (originally scheduled for 21 and 22 March respectively) had to be rescheduled at such late notice due to the very wet weather over these days. We hope this did not cause too much inconvenience.
New chef at Yaama Dhiyaan
Yaama Dhiyaan has welcomed a new chef, Dallas Dodd, who is excited about promoting contemporary Aboriginal cuisine. Dallas has had an extensive career including teaching hospitality and Aboriginal Studies and has been cooking for over 30 years.
Dallas is looking forward to giving people the opportunity to learn about Indigenous produce and passing on his skills to Aboriginal students to maintain traditional customs.
RWA would like to wish Dallas all the best in his new role.
Art is a load of rubbish
The construction of a sculpture made entirely of rubbish was completed at Australian Technology Park as part of a unique environmental initiative. The art installation was constructed by artist John Dahlsen using hundreds of pieces of polystyrene collected from Clean Up Australia Day. The poles were built using the pieces of polystyrene foam to create a series of towering totem-like structures.
The work received some finishing touches in ATP’s Exhibition Hall before being displayed at the Commonwealth Bank’s new headquarters in Darling Harbour.
Family connects with local heritage
Coming all the way from England, Chris Massey made a surprise visit to Australian Technology Park to investigate the heritage machinery in Bays 1 & 2 Locomotive Workshop that his great-great grandfather supplied through the family business. B& S Massey supplied equipment that is used in the old blacksmithing workshop dating from 1938-1950 and where it still sits today. Chris himself started working in the business in the 1960s when he was 21, overseeing the sales of forging equipment around the world. Along with supplying three forging hammers, B & S Massey also supplied a wheel flanging machine, the only proper surviving example remaining in the world today.
The RWA Heritage Interpretation Plan for the Eveleigh site is on exhibition until Wednesday, 6 April 2011.
