For decades until closure in 1988, the Railway Workshops were a lynchpin of the local economy and the surrounding community’s social and political life. No less than three State Premiers emerged from the industrial struggles there. It is the centenary of the Great Strike of 1917 and some of the site is to be sold for redevelopment.
