Paving the way for pedestrians and cyclists

Redfern-Waterloo Authority will be part of a working group to review pedestrian routes and congestion between Redfern Station and the University of Sydney.

Joining Sydney University, the NSW police, REDWatch, and RailCorp, the group will form part of City of Sydney’s Newtown, Erskineville, Camperdown and Darlington Pedestrian Cycling and Traffic Calming (PCTC) plan to introduce shared zones in low traffic streets, separated cycleways, wider footpaths, 40km/h speed limits, and more pedestrian crossings and bicycle parking.

The plan was developed with local communities to calm traffic and prioritise pedestrians with 54 traffic measures proposed to improve safety and amenity.

2010 Christmas banner competition

The Redfern-Waterloo Authority (RWA) in conjunction with the Australian Technology Park (ATP) invites schools located in the City of Sydney Local Government Area and members of the RWA’s Youth Services Taskforce to participate in the 2010 Eveleigh Market Christmas Banner competition.

The competition involves all entries being displayed at each Eveleigh Market held in December 2010 with the winning banners being announced at the special Christmas market to be held in 18 December, 2010.

The banners will be judged for Winning Entry, Runners Up and People’s Choice. The RWA will provide $1000 prize money for the Winner and People’s Choice Awards and $500 for the Runners Up.

A Participants Pack will be delivered to each school that registers. This will include;

  • One banner (3 m x 1.5 m)
  • Paints (Primary colours)
  • Information to be included in the layout and design (e.g. Schools name or logo)

For further information or to register your school or youth service for the competition please contact RWA’s Community Relationship Manager Julie Parsons on 9202 9100 or julie.parsons@rwa.nsw.gov.au.

Redfern Park and Oval receives architecture award

Redfern Park and Oval received the Architecture Award for Urban Design for the successful transformation of a previously underused site to an elegant and accessible community recreation facility.

The NSW Architecture Awards was held on Friday, 25 June 2010 with other award winners including Surry Hills Library and Community Centre and Paddington Reservoir.

Our congratulations goes to all of the winners, particularly the City of Sydney and Souths Rabbitohs. The full list of winners can be viewed at: www.architecture.com.au/i-cms?page=14364.

Local schoolboy learns RWA work

Redfern-Waterloo Authority recently played host to work experience student Charles Witherden-Costigan for the day, with the Inverell High School student spending time at the Les Tobler Construction Centre to learn more about the training program.

Les Tobler staff members Rohan Tobler and Andrew Constantinidis gave Charles a briefing on the course and the importance of mentoring. Charles was also given insight in to Government processes such as parliamentary folder notes and budget estimates

Heritage plans at ATP

A crane weighing 26 tonnes will be on display as part of an extensive heritage project being undertaken by Australian Technology Park to showcase the unique machinery in the park.

The crane will be housed on a plinth outside of Innovations Plaza and is part of ongoing heritage refurbishment works at ATP. Further improvement plans to this area include seating made out of old beams and the introduction of planter pots and recycling bins.

Work has begun at Innovation Plaza for the installation of the pivot crane with the work expected to be complete in August 2010.
