Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce Eveleigh Sub-Committee & Eveleigh Interpretation Plan

REDFERN WATERLOO HERITAGE TASKFORCE EVELEIGH SUB-COMMITTEE

As you are no doubt aware, the Redfern Waterloo area has a broad extent of local heritage with significant values for both the local community and wider public.

The Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce has been established to identify opportunities for the active conservation, interpretation and, where appropriate, the adaptive reuse of the heritage of the Redfern Waterloo area, in tandem with the revitalisation and renewal of the area. A project based approach has been chosen in order to achieve a broad and comprehensive treatment of the area’s diverse heritage values.

A number of Heritage Projects have been approved for conduct by the Taskforce, and nominations for additional Projects continue to be accepted. A suitable Heritage Project can be designed and conducted by interested members of the community.

The Taskforce is also seeking to establish a Sub-Committee to specifically address matters relating to the heritage of the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops (see further details below).

EVELEIGH INTERPRETATION PLAN AND EVELEIGH SUB COMMITTEE

The RedfernWaterloo Heritage Taskforce has endorsed:

1. The development of a draft Brief for the preparation of an Interpretation Plan for the Eveleigh Precinct, based on the initial collection of all relevant background information including reports plans, and studies prepared to date;

2. Establishment of an Eveleigh Sub-Committee to oversee the preparation of the Interpretation Plan (as was envisaged in the Terms of Reference in the engagement of project specific specialist’s).

An Interpretation Plan for the Eveleigh site is required to provide policy direction and practical guidance in relation to the conservation and interpretation of both moveable and fixed heritage. The Interpretation Plan should build upon the extensive work conducted to date for both North and South Eveleigh and individual sites within. The preparation and execution of the interpretation plan should generate community engagement through participation activities to gather information and gain consensus on outputs. Successful development of any interpretation plan or project requires a clear brief to:

• Identify and engage all stakeholders;
• Structure ideas and identify clear scope of works, including analysis of site, visitors and audience profile;
• Determine need for resources required (including any professional consulting input) as well estimated costs;
• Develop an implementation timetable;
• Secure necessary grants/funding.

The brief must be informed by all available background information, policies and conservation management plans. In the case of Eveleigh, this existing background information is extensive. The Brief should also describe intended interpretive media and style. It may include (but not be limited to) researched interpretation materials including leaflets, guides, brochures, panels, exhibitions and newsletters, and learning programmes, video/CDROM/DVD, website, events, skills training program, guided walks, activities & talks, art and performances.
