Minister Jackson's message to tenants about Homes NSW

This message to tenants from Minster Jackson was sent on February 1 2024 on the launch of Homes NSW. The email also contains a link to a Homes NSW information page at www.nsw.gov.au/departments-and-agencies/homes-nsw. More information will be available at the REDWatch meeting on February 5th 2024.

Hello,

My name is Rose Jackson and I’m the Minister for Housing & Homelessness.

I wanted to get in touch directly with you to let you know about important and exciting changes to how public housing is managed in NSW.

From February 1st Homes NSW will be the new agency that will manage and build public housing.

This will bring together LAHC (also known as department of housing), DCJ housing and homelessness services, the Aboriginal Housing Office and key worker housing functions from across government all under one roof.

This will stop the buck-passing and back and forth between departments making it easier for you to get the help you need.

Homes NSW will be your one stop shop for maintenance, repairs and support.

This is an important election commitment and is based on direct feedback from tenants that the system is complex, confusing and too hard to understand.

This is the NSW Government’s firm commitment to rebuilding the public housing system in NSW and treating you with the dignity and respect that you deserve.

What is changing?

Homes NSW will replace LAHC and DCJ and will be your point of contact for transfers, maintenance, repairs and support.

Why is this changing?

The current housing system is broken and we need to fix it. We know that we need better communication, less buck-passing and faster repairs. Homes NSW brings these services and support under one roof.

Homes NSW was based on extensive consultation with tenants and support services.

So do I need to do anything?

You don’t need to anything right now – official correspondence will now come from the Homes NSW team and there will be a new name for what many call the “Department of Housing” or “LAHC”.

Fixing the system will not happen overnight, but Homes NSW will place you squarely at the heart of the social housing system from day one.

If you are a resident of an AHO property, please know that you will continue to be supported as you are now, with culture and representation at the centre of everything.

For those living in LAHC properties, you will now be supported by the Homes NSW team.

There is so much more work to do, but Homes NSW is an important first step.

I look forward to updating you in coming months on the work we are doing and as always if you see me around please say hello – it is important to me that I hear from you and your thoughts on what we can do to make things better.

If you require assistance, I encourage you to download the My Housing App to your smartphone or contact the Housing Contact Centre on 1800 422 322.
