Independent expert advice to steer future of Waterloo

THis is a copy of the statement that appeared on the DPIE website on 17th March 2021 advising the names of the advisors to the departmental Secretary who will determine the Planning Proposal to be exhibited for Waterloo South.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment will be responsible for progressing a proposal to transform the southern portion of Waterloo Estate, pending advice from independent experts.

The renewal of Waterloo Estate is imperative for the delivery of new jobs, homes, parks and public space close to the economic powerhouse of the Sydney CBD.

The independent advice will help inform the Department’s consideration of the proposal and whether it should proceed to public exhibition for community feedback and whether any amendments are needed.

The independent advisory group will include:

  • Geoffrey London, former Government Architect in Victoria and Western Australia;
  • Sue Holliday, former Director General of the Department of Planning from 1997 to 2003; and
  • James Cain, former Executive Director of Major Projects Victoria, and former Lend Lease General Manager for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

If progressed to exhibition, the community will have an opportunity to provide their feedback before the Department undertakes a rigorous assessment and finalises the proposal to rezone the southern portion of the housing estate.

We will continue to work cooperatively with the City of Sydney and Land and Housing Corporation.

Rezoning the site will allow development applications to be lodged for the actual redevelopment of the site.
