WATERLOO ESTATE SET TO PROCEED TO EXHIBITION

Minister Stokes issued the Gateway determination for Waterloo South on 23 June but it was only released publically on 29 June at 6pm. Below is the media release issued by the Minister. The story was released early to the Sydney Morning Herald. LAHC, Council and some community representatives were breifed about the decision prior to the public release.

WATERLOO ESTATE SET TO PROCEED TO EXHIBITION

A new vision for the Waterloo Estate that proposes significant new social and affordable housing and 2.5 hectares of public space has received a Gateway determination to proceed to public exhibition.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the amended Waterloo Estate (South) planning proposal strikes a balance between plans from the Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) and the City of Sydney.

“The redevelopment of the Waterloo Estate is one of the State’s most significant urban regeneration projects,” Mr Stokes said.

“It must provide more social and affordable housing, new market housing, and high-quality design and public space outcomes.

“If approved, this vision will do exactly that by providing more than 3,000 new inner city homes with 30 per cent set aside for social housing and between five and ten per cent for affordable housing.”

The decision to put the revised proposal on public exhibition came after the Minister called the proposal in following a stalemate in negotiations between LAHC and the City of Sydney. An independent advisory group was appointed by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to help mediate the process.

“We’ve broken the planning impasse on the future of the Waterloo Estate, and I’d like to thank LAHC and the City of Sydney for coming to the table and working together on a solution,” Mr Stokes said.

“The Waterloo of the future will provide quality housing in a range of tenures with access to world-class public transport and beautiful public spaces in an outstanding inner city location.”

Public exhibition will take place before the end of the year, once requirements to update a number of technical studies are met, including studies for urban design, feasibility and transport.
