Clover Moore Letter to Minister Frank Sartor over Eveleigh Blacksmith Workshop

The letter below was written by Clover Moore MP to Minister responsible for Redfern Waterloo Frank Sartor on 6th June 2008. The letter asks the Minister to "Could you please review the decision to evict Wrought Artworks, consider alternative arrangements to maintain this workshop and inform me what action you will take?". The text of the full letter is provided below:
Dear Minister

Eveleigh Blacksmith Workshop

I write on behalf of Guido Gouverneur of Wrought Artworks, which operates at the Eveleigh Blacksmith Workshops about their eviction.

Guido tells me that Wrought Artworks has been operating at this location since 1991 and carries out specialised heritage metal work. I understand the workshop space was provided to Wrought Artworks in order to deter vandalism-and theft, ensure maintenance, and safeguard heritage equipment.

I understand that Guido has invested funds in the building to ensure occupational health and safety and keep it habitable. Guido tells me that he understood from the former owner, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, that there was opportunity for long term lease of this building. Guido tells me that the Redfern-Waterloo Authority requires he and his staff to leave the premises by 30 September 2008. Guido is concerned that this will have a detrimental impact on Sydney's heritage as well as his business. Guido says that he employs five apprentices and this eviction threatens their employment as well as the future of his business and the unique work that they carry out.

Could you please review the decision to evict Wrought Artworks, consider alternative arrangements to maintain this workshop and inform me what action you will take?

Yours sincerely
Clover Moore
