Coalition of Chippendale Groups Notice re CoS Meeting - 15 June 2006

The following has been issued by the Coalition of Chippendale Groups encouraging people to attend the Public Meeting being organised by the City of Sydney following the CSPC voting that the Minister takes planning control of the CUB site.

An URGENT PUBLIC MEETING has been organised by Council to brief you on the Carlton United Brewery site.

This is in response to grave concerns that the Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor will increase planning controls for the site to unsustainable levels.  This threatens promised parklands, heritage and local traffic improvements as well as increasing height limits.

We urge you to come to this very important meeting.

The meeting is on next Thursday, 15 June at 7:30pm - the Medina Executive (this is the former Post Office, near the Devonshire Tunnel at 2 Lee Street, (the only suitable venue available at short notice).

Please bring your neighbours, friends and anyone interested in what happens to Chippendale, or is concerned this could similarly happen on other sites in the inner city. Remember - developers use past planning mistakes as a precedent to later push through excessive development on nearby sites.

This meeting follows last Wednesday’s blatant manipulation of due process, when the Government controlled Central Sydney Planning Committee (vote 4 - 3) handed control of planning for the site to the Minister for Planning. This followed a letter sent by the Minister to the CSPC suggesting density across the site could further be increased.

As a result, controls for the site are expected to be increased to levels, experts say are unsustainable and rejected by the design jury 2 years ago.

Draft plans previously approved by the CSPC which were due to go on exhibition any day (for public comment) already allow thousands of extra residents/students/workers - yet the Minister appears to now want even  higher density.

Given the Minister for Planning is also responsible for the Redfern Waterloo Authority (RWA) this benefits the RWA, because the higher and more buildings (density) a developer can build increases funding for the RWA, which is allowed to seize developer contributions from the site for use outside Chippendale.

REMEMBER - ALERT YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND FRIENDS - THE BEST WAY FOR THE MINISTER TO UNDERSTAND HOW CONCERNED YOU ARE - IS TO COME TO THE MEETING.
