Frasers Clarifies CUB Design Excellence Process

Frasers has provided more information on its planned consultation and design excellence processes for the Carlton and United Breweries (CUB) site, to help Council consider whether to allow inclusion of some City land in Frasers' current development application reports CLOVER'S eNEWS - Friday 2 November 2007.

The application, lodged with the Department of Planning, involves demolition and recycling works for the site as the first stage of redevelopment. The Department is expected to place the application on public exhibition this month.

Council this week unanimously approved landowner's consent, recognising that inclusion of sections of Balfour Street, Irving Lane and Kensington Street owned by Council could enable completion of the site's 5,000 square metre public park ahead the current 2010 schedule.

We also expressed concern about the demolition of heritage buildings that the City had fought to preserve before the State Government took control of planning for the site. We have asked Frasers, which recently purchased the site, to reconsider options to preserve all significant heritage buildings, including the striking Sunburst building.

At recent community information sessions, Frasers reported that a workshop would be held in October to bring relevant experts together with the community, Council and the State Government to establish the process for a design competition.

While Frasers has written to the Department of Planning stating its intention to run a design competition, work has not progressed as quickly as Frasers hoped. The workshop is now expected later this month and Frasers has committed to public involvement through a number of open sessions where the local community to provide ideas and feedback.

In keeping with their commitment to best practice consultation, Frasers has assured the City that they will notify the date, time and location of the design excellence workshop at least 10 to 14 days prior to the event.
