NSW gives go-ahead for Redfern redevelopment

The New South Wales Government has given approval for the redevelopment of The Block in the inner-Sydney suburb of Redfern reports the ABC on 22 December 2012.

The Aboriginal Housing Company has been considering The Block's redevelopment since the mid 1980s.

It drew up plans in consultation with Sydney City Council, the metropolitan development authority and police.

The State Government has now given approval for the construction of 62 affordable houses, a 42-unit student complex as well as other commercial and public initiatives.

Planning Minister Brad Hazzard says the project is a catalyst for the broader Redfern-Waterloo area.

"Now it's up to the Aboriginal Housing Company to move forward with the appropriate investment," he said.

"It's a big change for the block and it's a big opportunity for Aboriginal people in Redfern."

The Minister says the area should now be know as Pemulwuy rather than The Block.
