North Eveleigh Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing was announced for the North Eveleigh site by Minister Sartor in 2008. The RWA applied for support for affordable housing from the Federal Government Housing Affordability Fund (HAF) in 2010. In April 2012 it was announced that 61 units of affordable housing would be placed with HAF support on the western end of the North Eveleigh site. The SMDA immediately placed on exhibition a Draft Review of Environmental Factors for Early Works and and Infrastructure Works. Expressions of Interest have also been called for from registered Affordable Housing Providers to own and operate the affordable housing.
Funding for 61 Affordable Housing Units at North Eveleigh
The Hon Brendan O'Connor MP Federal Minister for Housing and The Hon Brad Hazzard MP, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in NSW made a joint release on 18th April 2012 announcing that the federal Housing Affordability Fund is funding infrastructure for the placement of 61 affordable housing units at North Eveleigh. Affordable Housing in North Eveleigh by 2015
In March the SSH revealed that the RWA had secured funding in April 2010 from the Federal Housing Affordability Fund. While this was only finalised earlier this year the SMDA has been preparing plans to deliver 61 affordable housing units at North Eveleigh by December 2014 reports Geoff Turnbull in the May 2012 edition of The South Sydney Herald.

North Eveleigh Early Works conflicts with Concept Plan Approval : REDWatch
REDWatch opposes the SMDA Early Works proposal as it both differs from the Approved North Eveleigh Concept Plan and is in direct conflict with the Concept Plan Approval conditions. SMDA To Start North Eveleigh Affordable Housing Project
The SMDA have posted their response to community submissions and anounced they will start work on the infrastructure required for the North Eveleigh Affordable Housing project. The announcement issued an email statement and placed details on their website on 13 November 2012. The details from their website are below:
North Eveleigh Parks - Invitation to Contribute to Design, 24 November 2012 Nov 25, 2012 from 02:00 AM to 04:00 AM Yaama Dhiyaan, 255 Wilson St,
The SMDA has commenced the process for designing two parks at the western end of the North Eveleigh site. In accordance with the North Eveleigh Concept Plan, an application for the development of the parks must be submitted. This must occur prior or concurrently with the first application for new floor space. A private consultancy firm has been appointed to progress the design and submit this development application. The SMDA will seek to ensure that the community’s interests are incorporated in the design and will be undertaking consultation with the community and stakeholders.

Landscaping for Park near North Eveleigh Western Entrance
The landscaping and park proposed to the east of the new western entrance to North Eveleigh and Carriageworks has been approved in the road and early works approval. To make the details readily available REDWatch has requested additional details from the SMDA and these are provided below.
North Eveleigh Parks - Invitation to Contribute to Design by 17 December 2012
Two new parks of 3,350sm and 445sm are being proposed for the Newtown end of the North Eveleigh site. In an area where there is a low proportion of open space per capita it is very important to design these parks so that they meet the needs of those in the surrounding community and those visiting Carriageworks and the Eveleigh Markets. Locals are encouraged to make their thoughts known on what should happen with these parks.
North Eveleigh Affordable Housing Anouncement
The following statement regarding the appointment of Nace Civil Engineering and City West Housing Pty Ltd appeared on the SMDA/UGDC website on 30 January 2013.
City West in North Eveleigh
City West Housing (CWH) has been appointed as the affordable housing provider for the North Eveleigh affordable housing project initiated by the RWA now UrbanGrowth Development Corporation. CWH is to undertake the design, seek planning approval, construct and manage a minimum of 61 affordable housing units at North Eveleigh. The final number of units will be determined through the design stage reports Geoff Turnbull in the February 2013 issue of the South Sydney Herald.

A community Information session is being held on the new City West Housing residential building proposed adjacent to the Carriageworks building. The plans for the proposed parks on the Newtown end of the site will also be available for inspection.
Darlington TMAP and heritage
The following response for Lord Mayor Clover Moore to issues raised by REDWatch deals with Councils recent involvement with the SMDA / UGDC in preparing a TMAP dealing with the impact of the North Eveleigh development and in exploring Council's role in heritage activities at North Evleigh. The letter dated 15 March 2012 also deals with the Abercrombie Street upgrade.
North Eveleigh Parks DA - Until 4 May 2013
The City of Sydney has advised that the application for North Eveleigh parks, as described below, is on public exhibition until 6 May 2013.
North Eveleigh Affordable Housing Approved
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure anounced on 25 October 2013 that the application for affordable housing on North Eveleigh had been approved. The Department also advised that they had amended the North Eveleigh Concept Plan to allow the building to increase in height to 7 storeys. The details of the media release are below:
